In the south, there are some protected bays which offer good conditions for swimming, and in the northeast of the island currently wonderful beach landscapes are being developed that will offer the best conditions for water sports. UNESCO World Heritage Sites as the ancient royal cities of Anuradhapura and Pollonaruwa, the rock fortress of Sigiriya, the Buddhist cave temples of Dambulla in the "Cultural Triangle" or the fort of Galle in the south-west are very impressive. The last Sinhalese capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy, with its temple of the tooth is one of the highlights of a trip. Nature lovers will appreciate the highlands with their tea plantations. In the national parks in the south chances are high to track leopards. Elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, plenty of other game and bird species can be observed during safaris. From January to March even blue and sperm whales close spend their time in the south and east and they can be observed on outings. Often the excursion boats will be accompanied by dolphins.
