Morocco is located in north-western Africa and forms a geographical bridge between Africa and Europe. The Strait of Gibraltar separates the country from Spain by only about 14 kilometres. Morocco borders Algeria to the east, Western Sahara to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. The mighty Atlas Mountains, which begin in the immediate vicinity of the city of Marrakech, are particularly impressive. The highest mountain in the High Atlas is Toubkal at 4,167 metres. The climate in Morocco is very varied. The Atlantic coast has a Mediterranean climate, the mountains have heavy snowfall depending on the season, and the desert usually has temperatures above 40 degrees with very cold nights. Marrakesh, with its oriental flair and typical souks selling a wide variety of goods, captivates every visitor. The old town has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Particularly impressive in Marrakech are Djemaa el-Fna Square and the Koutoubia Mosque. Visiting the other royal cities of Fez, Meknes and Rabat is also an unforgettable experience for every visitor and gives Morocco a special charm. The wide Atlantic coast in the west with endless sandy beaches merges in the south with endless desert, which ultimately transitions into the Sahara. The Atlantic coastal town of Essaouira, formerly known as Mogadur, is very popular with tourists and artists and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The old town with its legendary city walls is considered a special example of an 18th-century fortified port city. It was built as a modern trading port under Sultan Mohammed III. Morocco has a population of around 37 million. The population consists mainly of Arabs and Berbers. Both cultures have a strong influence on the country. The official languages are Arabic and Amazigh (Berber language). French plays an important role in the economy and education. The official religion is Islam, which was brought to the country by Arab conquerors in the 7th century. However, there are also Christian and Jewish minorities, especially in the cities. Rabat is the capital and political centre of the country. Moroccan cuisine is known worldwide. Typical dishes include couscous, tagine and pastilla. The national drink is mint tea. However, there are some bars in the cities that also serve alcohol. Morocco is a constitutional monarchy. Mohammed VI has been king since 1999 and has extensive powers, but there is also a parliament and a government. In the 20th century, Morocco became a French and partly Spanish protectorate. However, the country regained its independence in 1956.
