The island is located between mainland Tanzania and Mafia Island, is 8ha in size and 1.1 km in circumference. It is surrounded by coral reefs, protecting the island.

DESCRIPTION
Nestling within Tanzania’s Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve, Thanda Island is 30 km east of the mainland of Tanzania, opposite Selous Nationalpark. It is surrounded by coral reef, protecting the island from massive waves and heavy seas. The island is located between mainland Tanzania and Mafia Island, is 8ha in size, 1.1 km in circumference and 300 m wide.
Thanda Island is a private luxury island for exclusive use, featuring a large villa with 5 suites for up to 10 adults and 9 children. Beach house romance, nostalgia and East African elegance personify the villa on Thanda Island, designed for a perfect summer in coastal whites, greens and blues. The owners of Thanda Island, Christin and Dan Olofsson, a Swedish philantrope couple, built the villa as their own discreet, sumptuous retreat and private playground.
Thanda Island offers various dining options and places including romantic beach dinner, bonfire or picnic on the sandbank. Its cuisine is fresh, delicious and customised to the guest's palate: seafood and tropical fruits, local dishes and a lot more can be found on the menu.
Guests have a superb choice of water and marine activities, island adventures and excursions. Highlights certainly are diving with whale sharks and dugongs, snorkelling at the private coral reef, visiting villages at Mafia Island, safari-excursions to Selous Game Reserve at Tansania mainland or trips to Sansibar and Dar es Salaam.
Thanda’s team is partnering with the Tanzanian Marine Parks and the leading non-profit organisation, Sea Sense, on a range of marine conservation and education programmes in the region. Minimum stay 3 to 7 nights depending on season.
