Elounda lies in the north-east of Crete, opposite the small island of Spinalonga. The Venetian cartographer Vincenzo Coronelli reports that Spinalonga not always was an island, but once with the adjoining peninsula Kolokitha was connected. The fortress of Spinalonga was one of the last active leprosy colonies in Europe. The last inhabitant, a priest, has left the island in 1962. Nowadays the „island of the damned” is unoccupied and is easy to reach from Elounda in 15 minutes by boat.
