After having been spending my holidays for over 20 years in Cyclades Islands like Paros, Tinos, Syros etc. – this year Patmos has attracted me for the second time. Patmos belongs to the island group of Dodecanese and is surrounded by many small, still very authentic islands such as Lipsi, Leros, Ikaria, Marathi and Arki. This attractive island Patmos is easy to reach via Samos or Kos as well as from Athens, for example, with the Blue Star Ferry Boat.
Patmos offers dream beaches and the very interesting Chora, the Old City placed over a hill which beholds the renown St. John monastery from 1088. Chora is the capital of the island with a medieval settlement stretching around the monastery. Most buildings and manor houses date back to the 15th century and later. A very special atmosphere can be found in the Agora, the so-called village square. In terms of house purchasing, this settlement is one of the most expensive areas in Europe. In Chora you will find numerous small shops, cute restaurants and traditional cafes.
As a presumptive place of creation of St John`s revelation, the island is one of the most important monastic locations of the Greek Orthodox Church and is linked to Greece by several frequent ferry routes.
Historical evidence shows that the fort in Patmos was inhabited during the Copper Age. The inhabitants of the island were Dorians and then Ionians. After the conquest of Constantinople, the island received numerous refugees, who first colonised in Chora. The island was recognised as a sacred island by the Greek parliament in 1981 and the international recognition took place in 1999 by UNESCO. Further female monasteries exist that are dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Today ´the island of the Apocalypse` with its approximately 3000 inhabitants and the lively harbour town of Skala is an extremely popular vacation destination.
In the evening you can go to Katharina in the ART CAFE, which is located directly at the port. From its very tastefully decorated terrace you have a wonderful view of the sea. Katharina is an absolute specialist for exceptionally delicious cocktails. In the summer, this beautiful Art Cafe receives artists from all over the world and often in evenings plays are performed or songs are sung spontaneously.
Patmos offers you an untouched nature, a moderate Mediterranean climate, natural sandy beaches, idyllic bays and hilly landscapes for bike wanderers. Motor and sailing boats find here many solitary anchorage bays for themselves.
The island Patmos is very appreciated by celebrities, but also preferred by those who seek qualitative tourism.
DOMIZILE REISEN FINE-RENTALS offers a wide portfolio in Patmos with choices of beautiful traditional townhouses, exclusive design villas with pool as well as 5 star hotel directly by the sea.
If someone would ask me which island is the most beautiful, it is difficult for me to make a clear statement.
Each island has its own charm and spirit. For those who are nightlife lovers and partyfans, some islands of the Cyclades would suit better. For individualists, Patmos is a very special and unique recommendation from me.
