Sunday: arrival day Plobsheim you will be met in Strasbourg and transferred by private chauffeured minibus to Panache for a Champagne welcome and the first opportunity to meet your crew. Perhaps there is time for a walk along the canal towpath before dark. Dinner on board.
Monday, day 2 from Plobsheim to Strasbourg (Porte de l’hopital) Our day starts with a morning cruise, across the Gran Ried wetlands and home to an abundance of birdlife, to arrive at the historic city of Strasbourg. Our mooring is just a stone’s throw from the historic centre of the city and, after lunch on board, we visit Place Gutenberg and explore La Petite France, a cobbled pedestrian area brimming with half-timbered houses, boutique shops and cafés and the 12th century Gothic pink sandstone cathedral, home to an astronomical Renaissance clock and soaring spire. Of course, everywhere is decked out for Christmas and we stroll through some of the city’s 13 Xmas markets. Dinner on board.
Tuesday, day 3 from Strasbourg to Souffelweyersheim After breakfast, our cruise takes us through the city and on past the impressive European Parliament building, the Palais de l’Europe, on the outskirts of Strasbourg to our mooring in Souffelweyersheim. After lunch on board, we visit Haguenau Christmas market with its wooden chalets and 16 metre long nativity scene at its centre. Dinner ashore this evening at a traditional Alsatian restaurant.
Wednesday, day 4 from Souffelweyersheim to Brumath This morning, Panache cruises further north along the canal, with good walking and cycling opportunities, through countryside and the Forest of Brumath to our rural mooring set amongst the trees. In the afternoon, we visit the Meisenthal Glass Bauble factory, the original birthplace of this iconic Christmas decoration, to watch the glass blowers in action. On the way back to the barge, we can also visit the outstanding René Lalique collection and see over 500 exceptional examples of Art Nouveau and Art Deco glassware. Dinner on board.
Thursday, day 5 from Brumath to Strasbourg (Port de Plaisance) This morning, we head to the enchanting town of Saverne where history traces back over 2,000 years to the Gallo-Roman Times. We visit the market and soak up the atmosphere of the Xmas decorations and even take a turn on the ice rink if we wish. We then begin our cruise back to Strasbourg where we moor in the Port de Plaisance. Time to wander some more of the city’s many markets before we visit the Musée du Chocolat and workshop to see seasonal candy being made, and maybe have a try ourselves. Before dinner on board, time for aperitifs and perhaps some traditional Alsatian ‘Flammekueche’ prepared by your chef.
Friday, day 6 from Strasbourg to Plobsheim After breakfast, we make our last cruise south, out of the city and across the Grand Reid to our mooring at Plobsheim. After lunch on board, we drive to Colmar to visit its famous six Xmas markets, including the gourmet foods section. Framed by fairytale half timbered houses with festive scenes and white Christmas trees on every corner, there is a magical atmosphere here. Time for some final Christmas shopping before we return to the barge for Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.
Saturday, time to say farewell from Plobsheim to your home After breakfast, you will transferred by private chauffeured minibus to their choice of location in Strasbourg.
